Gang of robbers busted, 8 held

Amritsar (rural) police claim to have arrested eight people who would rob people on the highway besides abducting women and raping them. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, SSP PS Virk said, "On a tip-off, a police party nabbed them near the T-Point on the Jandiala-Tarn Taran road bypass."
Giving details, Virk said, "During the preliminary investigation, accused Lakhwinder Singh and Buta Singh admitted that they, along with two of their accomplices, Sarabjit and Jaswinder, chased a car near Chohan village last month.
After forcing the car to halt, the accused not only beat up its two male occupants but also abducted a girl sitting in the car and later raped her."
In the incident, one of the male occupants Manpreet Singh was so badly beaten up that he later died. The girl after being raped was abandoned near Batala, said the SSP.
The accused were involved in two more such incidents. The gang had abducted a girl from near Beas and a girl from Gurdaspur town and later raped them, he said.
Besides, the gang, which was active on the highways, had snatched an SUV near Hoshiarpur and a tractor near Gurdaspur, he said.
Virk claimed that the there were numerous complaints of theft and snatching against the gang and more revelations were likely.
Those arrested have been identified as Mithu, Maninder Singh, Buta Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Gurlal Singh, Rakesh Kumar, Ramesh Kumar and Kashmir Singh. A case under various sections of the IPC and the Arms act has been registered against them.
