Following a tip-off, crime investigation agency (CIA) have arrested a gang of burglars for stealing electricity transformers, near Kaind Canal Bridge on late Sunday.
The gang of four people used to dismantle the equipment to ferret out expensive metal like copper and bronze
The police have recovered 90-kg bronze and a three-wheeler from their possession that they used for carrying the equipment.
The accused have been identified as Anil Kumar alias Billa of Jeevan Nagar, Chhuttan Kumar alias Bihari of Kohara village, Pankaj Kumar of EWS Colony and Mukesh Kumar alias Chikna of Bhagwan Chowk Janta Nagar.
A case under Sections 379 (theft) and 413 (habitually dealing in stolen property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused at the Dehlon police station.
Inspector Harpal Singh, incharge at CIA staff-1 said that the accused are from Uttar Pradesh and had been living here at rented accommodations.
The inspector said that the accused used to steal electricity transformers after disconnecting it from power cables and later dumped it after stealing copper and bronze. “The accused are already facing trial in 12 cases of burglaries. They were bailed out from the jail two months ago, but again indulged in the crime, ”said the inspector adding, “the accused admitted to have stolen 18 transformers from different places, including Sahnewal, Dehlon and Ladhowal.”
