A woman lawyer, separated from her husband, used a “secret” shared by him during the happier times to land him in jail.

The case is about a passport. Sandeep Singh, 33, a resident of Mattaur, Mohali, had mentioned his grandparents as his parents in his passport. After his father’s death when he was just three months old, Sandeep had been staying with them.

Later, as differences appeared between the couple, they started living separately a year and half ago. Ravinder went on to complain to the police that her husband had an illegal passport, following which Sandeep was booked for cheating under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code and under Section 12(1) of the Passport Act 1967.

The latter makes it illegal for any individual to knowingly furnish any false information or suppress any material information with a view to obtaining a passport or travel document. Sandeep was arrested late on Saturday evening when he went to his maternal aunt’s house in Phase 7. He was produced before the duty magistrate, who sent him to 15 days judicial custody.
