The association of hotel, restaurant and resort owners of Punjab has criticised the state government for the unprecedented hike in the property tax for the sector.

President of the district unit of association Satish Arora, while addressing a press conference here on Sunday, said that the new rates of property tax fixed by the local bodies department for hotels and restaurants are rs 8 per square feet while for the rest of the industry, the tax rate is Rs 4 per square yard.

He said that hotels, restaurants and resorts have been classified as an industry by the state government and the property tax rate of `4 per square yard should be applicable to these units as well but the new government notification issued a few days ago has created a separate category for hotels and restaurants and fixed property tax rate at `8 per square foot which is much higher.

The association said that they will approach the Punjab and Haryana high court against the new notification and demand not to treat the sector as an industry.
