The Amritsar city police have registered a case against the accused under Sections 309 of the IPC and Section 42 of the Prisoner's Act at the Cantonment police station on the complaint of the jail superintendent.

Investigating officer ASI Varinder Kumar of the Gumtala police post said the incident took place about 1.35 pm on Saturday. "The accused set his quilt on fire, stating that he wanted to end his life, but was saved when other inmates raised an alarm. The fire was extinguished and the accused was saved," he said, adding that the accused is in the jail, at present.

Meanwhile, in two separate cases, jail staff recovered heroin from two undertrials, identified as Sukhchain Singh, alias, Sonu, a resident of Ferozepur; and Pratap Singh, a resident of Lopoke, during a routine check-up.

"Separate cases under Sections 22/61/85 of the NDPS Act and Section 42 of the Prisoner Act have been registered against the accused at the Cantonment police station, while investigations are being held to ascertain how they came to possess the contraband during their stay in the jail," said ASI Varinder Kumar.
