Rana Gurjit, who was the richest candidate in the 2017 Punjab assembly elections, resigned from the Captain Amarinder Singh cabinet owing to the controversy over the multi-crore mining scandal. The former minister also has business interests in liquor and sugar manufacturing and is close to Amarinder.

Searches were simultaneously conducted on 23 offices owned by Rana Gurjit in Uttar Pradesh, Mohali, Chandigarh, Panchukla and Kapurthala.
