Lab technicians busy in election duties, no single test conducted at hospital

The election duties of two lab technicians and an Ophthalmic at local civil hospital caused a lot of problems for the patients came on Monday for treatment as a single test was not occurred into lab.

The election duties of two lab technicians and an Ophthalmic at local civil hospital caused a lot of problems for the patients came on Monday for treatment as a single test was not occurred into lab.


The patients had to go private labs for various types of test and paid extra money due to unavailability of these specialists.

Moreover, MD pathologist Dr Davinder Kataria was holding the charge of SMO civil hospital as SMO Pritpal Singh was on leave.

According to information available, senior medical lab technicians Jaswinder Singh and Ranjeet Kaur and Ophthalmic Surinder Pal have been deputed by administration into panchayat elections. They had gone to take part into rehearsal for elections on Monday.

On Monday, when the hospital opened after a break of two days (Saturday and Sunday), number of patients reached for treatment but they faced huge difficulties into absence of these specialists.

Seeking anonymity, a doctor said that as lab technicians were not available, the patients went to private labs for various types of tests and paid extra money as tests are done on cheap rates at civil hospital.

He said that civil hospital has OPD of around 300-350 daily and more than 150 tests are being conducted at civil hospital's lab.

He further said that a single test was not conducted at hospital on Monday.

Doctor further said that these technicians will also remain busy into election duties on June 29, July 3, 4 and people would suffer a lot.

MD pathologist Dr Davinder Kataria, who has been holding charge of SMO said that the department has written to deputy commissioner to not to depute lab technicians into election duties, but no response was received.

He further said that hospital has been suffering a lot due to election duties of these technicians.

When contacted, deputy commissioner Tanu M Kashyap, she said that she was not aware about this issue and will be able to reveal on Tuesday.

On the other hand, deputy commissioner has asked staff deputed into election duties to not to come to her and additional deputy commissioner for removal of their duties from elections.
