A mob had caught hold of one of the three men accused of Women’s Day gangrape in the city, and would have thrashed him to death had the police not intervened. While he got away with injuries, two cops were also wounded in trying to save him.

Based on a secret input, the police had laid a trap for accused Sunny near Ambedkar Nagar in the Model Town area. As he tried to get away, they went in pursuit and would have lost him had they not raised an alarm to set people after him. As people came to know what the man was accused of, instead of handing him over to the police, they started kicking and punching him. They would listen to no reason.

“Sunny’s wife is pregnant and expected to deliver anytime,” said a police officer. “She is at her parents’ at Ambedkar Colony and we had information that he would come to see her; so we cast our net.”

Assistant commissioner of police (Atam Park) Ramandeep Singh, who led the ambush party, confirmed that the mob had attacked a fleeing Sunny.
