A 24-year-old man has been arrested on the charge of raping a 13-year-old orphan at Mandi Ahmedgarh in Sangrur district.
The police registered the case on Sunday after the girl's medical examination confirmed rape. Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Sukhdev Singh Virk said the accused, identified as Mohammad Ghulam Rasool, was arrested a few hours after the crime.
Virk said the girl stayed with her two brothers in a rented accommodation at Mandi Ahmedgarh. The accused also stayed in the house as a tenant.
The DSP said the girl was alone in her room on June 29 when the accused entered and gagged her with a piece of cloth before raping her. He added that the accused fled from the spot but the victim somehow managed to cry for help, following which one of her brothers entered the room and took her to a local hospital.
"We have recorded the victim's statement and registered a case against the accused under Section 376 (rape) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 3 and 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act," Virk said.
