A man was injured when a security guard at the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) depot here opened fire at people trying to steal diesel from the supply line of a train on Monday.
The train with 50 bogies loaded with diesel was being unloaded at the depot through a pipeline. Around 50 residents of nearby areas reached there to steal diesel from the train, parked outside the depot. The four security guards deputed there warned people not to steal diesel, but the latter didn’t go away. Then one of the guards opened fire in air. However, people allegedly started pelting stones on the guards.
One of the security guards allegedly opened fire from his .12 bore rifle and splinters hit Pradeep Kumar alias Babbu, 25, a resident of Phoos Mandi. He was admitted to the local Max hospital. BPCL territory manager Kuldeep Gulati said the police are investigating under which circumstances the guard opened fire.
Investigation officer (IO) sub-inspector Jagdish Chander said the police will act only after recording the statement of the injured.
