Man sets son, granddaughter on fire in Pathankot; kills self too

After the horrific crime, the accused, Manjit Singh (63), jumped into a river and his body was found on the banks of tributary on Friday morning.

In a shocking incident, a 63-year-old inebriated man poured petrol on his son’s sleeping family of three and set them on fire at their Sujanpur home on Thursday late night. His son Sewa Singh (40) and his one-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter Mankit Kaur were killed, while daughter-in-law Baljot Kaur, with 60% burns, is critical at an Amritsar hospital.

After the horrific crime, the accused, Manjit Singh (63), jumped into a river and his body was found on the banks of tributary on Friday morning.

Baljot has told the police that the father-son duo frequently fought over the possession of a tractor that her husband, Sewa, had taken on loan recently.

Neighbours who took the three victims to hospital said doctors at the Pathankot Civil Hospital referred them to a hospital in Amritsar. Sewa, who has sustained 80% burns died in the Amritsar hospital, the said.

“A family dispute led to the crime. We have arrested Wassan Singh, a friend of Manjit and his accomplice in this crime,” Sujanpur SHO Harkishan Singh said.

A case under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC has been registered.
