Investigation officer sub-inspector (SI) of Beas police station Sukhdev Singh said in 2001, Satnam Singh of Sathiala village married Kulwant after the death of his first wife.

He said Satnam already had two sons—Maninder Singh and Sawinder Singh. “After one year of their marriage, Kulwant gave birth to a son, Anmol Singh,” he said, and added that since then, the family had been living together.

He said four years ago, Maninder and Sawinder went to Gujarat to work as labourers in a factory. “Three months ago, both the brothers returned to the village and had been living in Satnam’s old house, which is also in the same village,” said the officer.

He said both the brothers had been demanding from their father the registration of their old house in their name but Satnam had been refusing their demand.

He said both the brothers had been considering their step-mother as a hurdle. “On Wednesday morning, when Kulwant was alone at home, Maninder barged into the house and stabbed her 17 times before she was dead,” he said.

Soon after getting information, he, along with other police personnel, reached the spot and began investigation.

“The -body of the victim has been sent to Amritsar civil hospital for conducting postmortem,” he said and added a case under section 302 (murder) has been registered against Maninder, who along with his brother is absconding. “The role of Sawinder is also being considered, who will also be booked in the case for conspiracy,” he said.
