The building branch of the Jalandhar municipal corporation on Tuesday demolished three illegal buildings at Dilbagh Nagar locality amid protest by angry residents.
The locality falls in ward number 45, which is represented by senior deputy Mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia in the civic body.
MC inspector Navjot Duggal was manhandled in a confrontation by Shiv Sena workers when the building branch officials led by senior town planner (STP) Hemant Batra went to the area to demolish the buildings.
The officials first removed a shop owned by Kishan Lal, a local BJP worker. The shop was illegally constructed in the residential area.
The MC workers then demolished other shops.
The Sena workers were learnt to have got worked up as the MC officials didn’t take action against another illegal building, owned by RSS member Anil Sharma.
The protesters said that the MC was biased and had taken bribe from Sharma.
Kamaljit Singh Bhatia, on whose complaint the action was taken, said, “I am happy that the MC commissioner took action. The MC should not let such construction take place in the first place.”
