The driver of the bus (PB-30 F-4578), which was on its way to Faridkot from Gidderbaha, fled after the incident.

The police registered a case against the unidentified driver, while the bus was impounded.

Jagdeep Singh, assistant sub-inspector, Kotbhai police station, who visited the spot, confirmed that an FIR had been lodged. “Action is being taken as per law,” he added.

This is the second such incident involving a New Deep bus in the past two months. On December 11, Class-8 girl Arshpreet Kaur, a resident of Channu village in Muktsar, had been crushed to death by a bus when she was standing on the roadside.

When contacted, Jagtar Singh, Dhillon’s personal assistant, said he was not aware of the incident. “You had better talk to Dhillon saab,” he said.

The Akali leader was not available for comment despite repeated attempts.
