National SC/ST Commission directs SSP to register FIR
The National SC/ST Commission Tuesday directed senior superintendent of police (SSP) Tarn Taran KS Dhillon to register FIR against the cops, who had assaulted a woman in full public view on a main road in Tarn Taran, Punjab on Sunday.
Deputy chairman of National SC/ST Commission Dr Raj Kumar Verka has summoned SSP KS Dhillon and Tarn Taran deputy Commissioner HS Pabla.
Verka while slamming the police and its conduct against the women, said: "The entire incident has shown the way women are being treated by Punjab Police in the state. I have got calls from every corner of the country and the incident has brought shame to Punjab."
Demanding strict action, Verka asked the SSP to submit a detailed report to the commission in seven days and also ensured criminal proceedings against the erring cops.
Meanwhile, SSP KS Dhillon said: "The commission has told us to register FIR and also send SHO to police lines. I am going personally to record the statement of the girl and all those involved in this will be taken to task.”
On a question that only two cops have been suspended whereas video footage shows half a dozen cops involved in this, SSP said: "A senior SP is doing the probe and all those involved will face action."
Meanwhile, deputy commissioner HS Pabla also stressed that already police had been told to act tough.
On Sunday, a girl, who complained that she was being eve-teased by some taxi drivers was mercilessly beaten up by Punjab cops in full public view.
Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal had also slammed the police and ensured strict action against the cops involved.
