The decision came a day after NRHM workers had on Monday gone on a pen-down strike to demand higher salaries and permanent jobs of contractual workers.

Services at primary and community health centers in the district, however, were affected on Tuesday. Avtar Singh, president of NRHM Employees Union said they had spoken to Punjab health minister Surjit Kumar Jyani. “He gave us an assurance that our jobs will be regularised. So, we have decided to lift our strike,” he said. Earlier in the day, NRHM workers had protested at the civil surgeon's office on Hambran Road and raised slogans against the state government.
