An estimated 1,500 residents gathered to keep their date with the Raahgiri event that began at 5.45am with children ruling the streets on roller skates amid applause and awe from elders who had gathered for yoga, aerobics and dance.

Morning walkers were in for a surprise as yoga and aerobics enthusiasts performed at the event, organised by Haryana Police and HDFC Bank, near the park’s main gate.

Panchkula legislator Gian Chand Gupta, deputy commissioner Mukul Kumar and DCP Rajender Kumar Meena took a round of the venue and watched the activities.

“Panchkula has made a healthy start. A city that rises early and exercises has a bright future,” Gupta said, lauding the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and yoga guru Ramdev in making the ancient culture a part of our daily routine.

“Yoga has become an international festival thanks to them,” he said, congratulating Patanjali Yog Samiti’s Col Surender Anand (retd) and Vinod Bajaj for organising the programme.

The DC assured the participants that the two-hour Raahgiri from 6am to 8am would be a regular feature in Panchkula starting with this Sunday.

DCP Meena urged residents to make the most of this opportunity and take part in larger numbers.
