Three months after the brutal murder of student leader-turned-sarpanch Rajwinder Singh, alias Ravi Khwajke, at a marriage function on February 20, police on Saturday nabbed one of the accused in the case.
The accused, identified as Sukhchain Singh, alias Gopi, is suspected to have passed on information to key accused Davinder Bambiha, alias Davinder shooter.
Police sources said that Gopi had been tailing Khwajke for days and on February 20, it was he who had informed Davinder and other accused that the latter is coming to attend a marriage function at Gill Gardens at Malerkotla road.
Police claim he also identified the victim for them in a crowd of supporters.
Khwajke was ultimately killed after Davinder and his other accomplices pumped 14 bullets into him, when he sat on a chair. After the killing, the accused performed a celebratory dance at the spot and fled after firing several rounds in the air.
The other accused identified in the killing were Davinder Shooter, Avtar Singh of Dosanjh village in Moga, Jumpy and Bunty, Jassi, Navpreet Singh Cheema alias Noni and Mandeep Singh of Meharban.
All are still at large. However, another two accused Dharminder Singh Gugni and Karamveer Singh are lodged at the Ludhiana Central Jail in connection with another criminal case.
The police will produce the accused before court on Sunday and seek police remand.
An additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) said raids were on to arrest the rest of the accused.
