Talking to mediapersons after presiding over a general body meeting of PSEB engineers association here, he said that it was the duty of the state to provide these subsidies to the farmers and the weaker sections of society as Punjab was a welfare state.
Moreover, he said, agriculture was no longer a profitable venture and had already reached a point of saturation. It was the duty of the state government to protect the rights of the farmers in the state, he added.

"Even advanced countries like the US are giving very high subsidies to farmers for ensuring food security. Therefore, there is nothing wrong in giving subsidies to farmers of the state," he added.
