Infidelity had led to the murder of a woman whose maggot-infested body was found in a house at Mataur earlier this month, police claimed on Friday. Victim’s husband Ramesh Yadav, 32, was arrested from Madhepura in his home state Bihar, where he had fled after the crime on May 2.
The body of Rupa Devi, 27, was recovered on May 5 after foul smell starting emanating from their locked house. Her hands were tied and a dupatta was found around her neck.
Yadav, who worked as a mason in Nayagoan, told police that Rupa had eloped with another man about 18 months back, leaving him and their three children. To “punish” her for this infidelity, he strangulated her with a dupatta, he told police.
Bank slip did him in
After the murder surfaced, police were in a tizzy as they could not establish the identity of the victim or the accused. The couple had shifted to a rented accommodation in Mataur, Sector 70, on April 30.
The house owner, Raj Rani, had told police that the couple was yet to submit identity proofs. The woman had told her that she worked in Ludhiana and their three children were staying in a hostel.
While searching the house, police found two slips in the garbage — one was of a bank transaction for Rs 4,000 and another was a doctor’s prescription from private hospital. While the prescription slip helped police establish Rupa’s identity, the bank transaction slip helped trace the accused. The transaction was made by Yadav’s father from his account in a bank branch at Madhepura.
Police teams were sent to Bihar from where Ramesh was arrested. He was brought to Mohali on Friday morning.
