An 18-year-old girl died in Punjab’s Mansa district on Saturday, a day after she set herself ablaze over a dispute with a man she was having a relationship.

The victim, who worked in a beauty parlour, was having a relationship with Satnam Singh of Barnala. The two met near Tamkot village on Friday evening and got into a heated argument. In a fit of rage, the girl set herself on fire.

She was found in semi-burnt condition by the passersby who informed the police.

She was taken to the Mansa civil hospital. “She was admitted with 60-70 per cent burns and succumbed to her injuries on Saturday morning,” the police said.

The police said Satnam, who is married, used to visit his sister and the victim’s residence is in the same neighboured. The two got into a relationship.

On Friday, Satnam called her near Tamkot village where the two got into a verbal altercation after which he left.

The victim’s statement was recorded in the presence of a judge at the hospital.

The police have booked Satnam, who is absconding, under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian penal Code (IPC).
