Chief electoral officer Narender Chauhan on Saturday said that election for one seat of Rajya Sabha in the state is scheduled for February 7.

He said that notification of election for one seat of Rajya Sabha, which is going to be vacant in April, would be issued on January 21. “Last date for filling the nomination will be January 28,” he said.

The scrutiny of nomination papers would be done on January 29 and names could be withdrawn up to January 31.

“If necessary, the polling will be held on February 7 between 9am and 4 pm,” he said and added that the election process would be completed on February 10.

He said that general candidates would have to deposit Rs 10,000 as security money while amount had been fixed at Rs 5,000 for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates.

The only seat will be open for election will be of Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) veteran Shanta Kumar whose term as Rajya Sabha member would end in April. Lobbying is already on for the seat in Congress as the BJP may not field the candidate due to short of strength- 26 MLAs. Shanta Kumar was elected to Rajya Sabha in March 2008.
