In a major shot in the arm for Congress nominee from here Sunil Kumar Jakhar, three-time MLA from Guru Har Sahai Rana Gurmit Sodhi, who was earlier disappointed with the refusal of the party ticket to him, on Saturday, openly came out in support of Jakhar along with his supporters.
After his arrival from New Delhi, Sodhi had convened a party workers’ meeting at village Mohan Ke Hedar and, while addressing the gathering, Sodhi ended all speculation about contesting the polls by his som Anumeet Hira Sodhi or any other of his supporters against Jakhar.
“We will work round-the-clock to ensure the victory of Jakhar to start the end the autocratic rule of the Akalis in Punjab which had badly affected the life of the common man during the last seven years”, roared Sodhi.
On stage, Sodhi garlanded Jakhar and gave a call to his workers to burn midnight oil to win the seat which Congress party had been losing since 1989.
It may be mentioned here that it was crucial for Jakhar to secure the whole-hearted support of Rana to ensure his victory as he carries a lot of influence among the Rai
Sikh electorate because Rana had played a key role to get Rai Sikhs (a community having 2.30 lakh votes) a status of SC/ST from then Congress government in Punjab and even successfully persuaded with Congress led UPA Government.
After the party ticket to Jakhar, Hira Sodhi had openly expressed disappointment and even romours were in the air that he might contest as an independent candidate.
Various speakers asked Jakhar to assure that after his victory, Sodhi should be elevated as Congress legislative party leader in the state assembly and Jakhar, too, seconded the demand of Sodhi’s close aides.
Jakhar expressed gratitude to Sodhi for his support.
