The victim was identified as Karamjit Singh, 50, who is a panchayat member and associated with the AAP. As he was injured, Singh was admitted to the civil hospital Sangur where he is still under treatment and unfit to make any statement before the police. His son, Gurdeep Singh, alleged that the Akali goons assaulted his father.

He said, “My father was attacked with sharp-edged weapons by SAD supporters. The culprits came in two cars and beat him up brutally. When he fell unconscious, they ran away.”

“It is a condemnable act and we demand strict action against the accused. After Karamjit gives his statement, the culprits should be arrested immediately,” said AAP Dirba candidate Harpal Cheema.

“Police are looking into the matter and we have visited the hospital, but he was unfit to say anything. Action will be taken according to law after the statement of the victim,” said, Hardial Dass, Mehlan Chowk police post in-charge.
