Impressed by the efforts of environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal for reviving the sanctity of holy Kali Bein (a rivulet of Beas river), yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Wednesday advocated the use of community services in the same as Seechewal did for cleaning the other rivers of the country including the Ganges and the Yamuna.
The Seechewal model seemed to be best suited for the purpose, he said after his visit to Nirmal Kutiya at Sultanpur Lodhi. He also visited Gopaldham, a cowshed, in the city.
Lauding Seechewal, Ramdev said, "Trying to save the religious heritage is always laudable and Seechewal had done remarkably well for restoring the sanctity of the rivulet having historical relevance. We can apply the same methodology for saving other rivers of religious importance in the country and Seechewal can play a constructive role in the project by providing expertise."
It may be noted that Kali Bein, a 64-km long rivulet of fresh water, had got converted into slush and there was no flow of water in it due to dense wild vegetation in it. This was cleaned at the initiative and efforts of Seechewal, who is also the member of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), without any government support setting an example not only before the countrymen but the whole world.
This Bein has great historical importance in Sikhism as it is said that Guru Nanak Dev had got enlightenment in this Bein in the 15th century.
Former president APJ Abdul Kalam had also praised the efforts of Seechewal in his speeches. Seechewal had also found place on the cover page of Times, a US-based magazine.
Ramdev also visited the gallery showing the phase-wise pictures of the Bein-cleaning project undertaken by Seechewal. He also visited the Sikh museum and previewed the information on computers on Sikhism and Sikh history.
Before reaching Sultanpur Lodhi, Baba Ramdev was greeted by his followers at Kapurthala, Sheikhupur and Hussainpur where, in his typical style, he did not forget to attack the union government for its anti-people policies.
He sais, "Prime minister Manmohan Singh is only a puppet in the hands of Sonia Gandhi and the people of the country would certainly vote for Narendra Modi for a change. Arvind Kejariwal will only cut the vote bank of Congress and will have no effect on the BJP."
"Hopefully, in 2014, the country will be free from the corrupt government at the centre and the country will Ram-Rajya under the leadership of Narendra Modi," Ramdev said.
However, when asked to comment on the SAD-BJP government of Punjab, which is only talking big about development but there is nothing on the ground and people of the state are fed up with non-effectiveness of BJP for safeguarding interests of urbanites, Ramdev preferred to keep mum.
