Shops gutted in major fire in Jalandhar on Diwali night

There was no report of any casualty.

Over a two dozen shops were gutted on Diwali night when a major fire broke out in Sudama market near Jyoti Chowk in Jalandhar.

However, there was no report of any casualty.

A priest, Vinod Kumar Mishra, who lives near the market, noticed the fire around 9 pm on Thursday and called up the fire brigade. The impact of the fire was such that it engulfed shops within no time, he said.

The people belonging to nearby areas and local police helped the firefighters to douse the flames.

Sub-fire officer Rajinder Sharma said the fire was controlled within four hours. He also said that there was no casualty due to the fire.

Meanwhile, Balwant Singh who is the president of the market association suspected foul play and demanded compensation from the government.
