Suicides among middle-aged group on the rise in Ludhiana
The data released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) recently regarding suicides in the district has brought out the fact that people in the 30-44 age group are most vulnerable to suicidal tendencies. Even psychologists and psychiatrists say that the number of people coming to them from this age group was increasing.

A total of 54 suicides were reported in 2013, of which 29 victims belonged to the said agegroup, including 15 women.
The basic reason behind this is attributed to depression and frustration from life due to several reasons, including family problems. Women in Ludhiana are especially prone to suicidal tendencies due to increasing alcoholism as per the experts.
Dr BP Mishra, who is a clinical psychologist at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, said that the 30-44 bracket was most prone to suicides as they fail to achieve the targets set in life, leading to depression. “When a person is young there is zeal and energy, which subside with age and people often go into depression resulting in suicidal tendencies” said Mishra.
Dr Rajiv Gupta, a psychiatrist, said that in urban Ludhiana a number of women were habitual drinkers. “This results in depression and behavioral changes as the alcohol affects women more than it does men,” said Gupta.Surprisingly, the trend of suicides in rural areas is also increasing every year. A total of 638 suicides from 2000-2010 were reported in rural areas of Ludhiana district, of which 18% were women.
As per a study conducted by the department of economics and sociology, PAU, families of majority of women who committed suicide were under debt.
Sukhpal Singh, head of economics and sociology department of PAU, said that out of the total suicides in rural areas, 12% women were labourer, while 6% belonged to the farming families.Majority of the suicides even in rural areas were from 30-44 age group.
