Teachers need to shape students as nation builders, says Kalam

Creativity is the key to success in the future, and primary education is where teachers can bring creativity in children at that level. A great teacher is one who will improve the level of students who are poor in studies. This was stated by former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam at Satya Bharti Adarsh Senior Secondary School, Sherpur Kalan, Ludhiana, on Friday.
He visited the school to administer 'Eleven-Point Oath for Teachers'. The school students welcomed him with a folk song.
During his speech at the school, Kalam said, "Namaskar, I have prepared a big talk but I will cut it short as I want to interact with you." He appreciated the students for the welcome-cum-folk song.
Then he said, "Teachers need to be role models, inculcate moral values, inspire youth with value system and shape the students as nation builders. The way a teacher teaches in class, her dress up, knowledge all puts an impact on students. I was blessed with the best teachers in school and when I was studying in Class 5, one of my teachers give me a vision for my life. One day he was teaching about bird's flight and how birds create the lift and fly. He also explained how they change direction while flying. At that time I decided to opt for science after Class 10."
While interacting with teachers, one of them asked him for his take on the present democracy system in India. He replied that "Democracy has a faster action."
During his interaction with the students of Classes 6 to 9, he asked them what they want to become in life and most of the students replied that they want to become astronauts. He informed the students that by 2030 Indian astronauts would walk on moon and mars. He also motivated students to dream, dream and dream, dream transforms into thoughts, thoughts results into action.
He said, "Learning gives us creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking provides knowledge and knowledge makes you great. So be great citizens."
He suggested the students to say "I am the best, I can do it, God is always with me, I am a winner and today is my day".
A student of Class 9, Ashish asked him what he likes about their school. He replied, "Your school is creative and where students are creative that school is a great school."
Kalam gifted five of his own books to the school library during his visit to Satya Bharti Adarsh Senior Secondary School.
Two students presented their paintings to Kalam and he appreciated the students for their commendable work.
Several students were not able to understand his conversation in English so a schoolteacher translated Kalam's conversation for them in Hindi.
Kalam also visited two more schools in Ludhiana - Sat Paul Mittal School, Dugri and BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar. He interacted with students in both schools. At Sat Paul Mittal School, he recited narrated a poem - I will fly and fly, I am born with potential, I am born with goodness and trust, I am born with ideas and dreams, I am born with greatness, I am born with confidence, I am born with wings. So, I am not meant for crawling, I have wings, I will fly, I will fly and fly.
