A day after 22-year-old Sumeet Kaur of Swara village, near Kharar in Punjab, a student of the final year of bachelor of computer science engineering at Thapar University in Patiala, allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Bhakra mainline canal on Monday, the police checked her academic record on Tuesday.

Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Sourav Jindal said, during the scrutiny of her academic record, it came to the fore that she scored ‘E’ grade overall in the examinations.

“Sumeet had scored only 50% marks (5 CGPA out of 10) overall in her results in the semester examinations while the results of the final semester were yet to be declared. She also failed to get a job during the placement drive, while her friends got lucrative jobs,” the DSP said.

He added that her father Harinder Singh told the police that Sumeet had told them that she had scored ‘A’ grade overall in the examination and had also got a job in a private company.

“Investigators assume that the victim might have been under stress of her lies getting exposed,” the police said.

The DSP said that the police are also trying to contact her friends and roommates in the university hostel.

“A woman roommate of the victim belonged to Jammu and Kashmir and her phone is out of reach. We are hopeful her roommate will explain about her actions and behaviour,” he said.

The police said the university authorities told the police that her theoretical semesters were over, but she was yet to submit the project report.

Divers had fished the body out of the canal near the Patiala-Nabha highway on Monday morning. Police retrieved her college identity card from her pocket.

Police scanned the closed circuit television (CCTV) camera footage that shows the victim leaving the campus around 6am.

The DSP said the location of her last phone call was found to be near the canal and it might have been washed away in strong water currents.

Police have started inquest proceedings under Section 174 (to inquire and report on suicide, etc) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) after recording statements of the family members.

Her father said Sumeet was their only daughter and she never showed any signs of stress even during the last call made to her mother on the day of the incident.

“She was good in studies and had scored 95% marks in 10+2. She told us that she got ‘A’ grade, but we never found her under stress,” said her father, who is a farmer.
