The fire broke out in the first storey of the building, which was being used for storing cashmilon fabric. As the building was old with a lot of wooden structures, the fire spread to other parts quickly. It was noticed by neighbouring residents and shopkeepers around 11am, following which they called the fire brigade.

As the building is located in a congested and narrow street, fire tenders had a tough time reaching there. Ongoing beautification and development works in the vicinity added to the delay. Around eight tenders finally managed to reach the spot one by one around 11.45.

By the time the firemen started operations, plumes of smoke along with fire could be seen coming out of the windows. The firemen had to struggle for around two hours to bring the fire under control. Residents also chipped in to douse the flames. They said if fire tenders could have reached on time, the loss could have been prevented.

Sources said a short circuit could have caused the fire. The godown owner, Babbi, said he used to prepare clothes from cashmilon fabric, which was stored in the building. Although he could not ascertain the loss, it is expected to be in lakhs.
