Two brothers die of ‘drug overdose’ in Jalandhar
Police recovered drugs, injections and some banned drug substances near the bodies.
A week before the launch of the drug abuse prevention officers (DAPO) programme by the state government on May 17, two brothers in their twenties allegedly died of overdose of drugs at the Amar Nagar locality here on Friday.
Police recovered drugs, injections and some banned drug substances near the bodies at an isolated place here. The deceased have been identified as Saurav Kumar, 26, and his brother Nitin, 21, of the Ratan Nagar.
As per information, the youths were going on their bike to attend a marriage function along with their parents who were on another bike.
The parents reached the marriage palace, but their sons did not reach there for a long time. Investigating officer and assistant sub-inspector Rakesh Kumar said After a long wait, when the youths did not come to the marriage palace, their father Rajiv Kumar called up Saurav on his mobile.
“Some locals answered the call and informed the family that two youths were lying unconscious on the ground on the side of road. The family reached the spot where they were lying unconscious and took them to the civil hospital but doctors declared them brought dead,” the ASI said.
He said as per the preliminary investigation, it was found that the youths died of drug overdose as used injections and banned substances were found near their bodies.
“We are waiting for the postmortem examination report, which was conducted at the civil hospital here to ascertain the cause of death.The doctors also collected samples of their viscera and sent them to a government laboratory for chemical examination,” he said.
The family members, however, claimed that youths died a natural death and denied to conduct postmortem of the bodies.
The inquiry officer said as per the father’s statement, the family was aware of their younger son Nitin’s habit of consuming drugs and they had also asked him to quit.
Meanwhile, the police initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) on bases of the statement of victims’ father.
