Senior medical officer at the civil hospital, Dr Sudhir Kumar, told Hindustan Times that the undertrial was brought dead to the hospital at about 9am.

Rajbir Singh, a BJP councillor of Batala civic body, was behind bars on the charge of killing an NRI, Gurinder Singh alias Goldy of Umarpura (Batala), at the Batala courts complex on September 9, 2011. Rajbir's four accomplices are facing trial in a Gurdaspur court. It is said that Rajbir had an old enmity with Goldy.

The body was handed over to Rahbir's family members after the post-mortem at civil hospital and viscera was sent for examination.

Gurdaspur sub-divisional magistrate Tejinderpal Singh Sandhu expressed ignorance over the death of the undertrial.
