The nuisance of unwanted guests at this wedding went to a whole other level. The groom was a fugitive wanted in at least four cases, and police struck just as he was getting married at a religious place in Shahbazpur village , 4 km from the district headquarters, on Saturday.

Declared a proclaimed offender, Gurlal Singh, 35, is from Hansawala village in Khadoor Sahib sub-division. The marriage could not be completed as the police team of five Inspectors and a score of other personnel conducted the raid at Nirmal Kutia, premises of a religious sect.

“We had a tip-off that Gurlal, wanted in a cases of attempt to murder, fake currency and other offences, was at Nirmal Kutia,” said senior superintendent of police (SSP) DS Mann at a press briefing.

However, the woman who was there to tie the knot with Gurlal said he is innocent. She refused to be identified, but added, “If the police do not let him go, I will commit suicide.”

The SSP did not say if he had information that Gurlal was the sect premises to get married.

“He was wanted in Tarn Taran and Kapurthala districts,” he said. “His cousin, Sahil, is also wanted in many cases.”
