Cannes saw India Shining thrice over. Tinsel town’s “Teen Devian” --- Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya and Sonam Kapoor --- mayn’t be best friends forever (BFF), when it comes to smile or style, but one thing Cannes be said for sure, they gave the French Riviera another kind of BFF moment - best foot forward.

It’s been the season of cinema and celebrities converging at the French Riviera, so how Cannes we not talk of it? Its red carpet ‘Cannes’ - be said to be for fashionistas what the French Open is to tennis lovers – grand slam of global glam.

The red carpet was not just a celebration of India Shining (blame it on bling!) but also India Smiling, self(ie)-consciously, with the awesome threesome giving Instagram India selfie moments thrice as nice.

So self-ie centred was India’s Cannes outing that selfies were flying on Instagram faster than glitterati gowns gallivanting down the red carpet. Never mind that Cannes has seen strictures wherein selfies “faced” a ban, reminiscent of a ban on certain currency closer home, the selfie craze only gained greater currency at Cannes. The organizers “Cannes” jolly well take a walk, for this rule ruled more in the breaking than in braking.

This brings us to stars’ selfie styles that spelt picture perfect on Instagram India.

When the diva in question is as vertically advantaged as Dips, the selfie frame can’t butt stoop to the hips. When what makes up Deepika’s selfie is an emerald Brandon Maxwell gown, De Grisogono emerald diamonds, smoky antique-green highlighted eyes, and Chloe Gosselin-propped legs that tower taller than the fans’ selfie aspirations, it’s a selfie style sure to make Instagram India go green with envy. Emanating from leggy lasses, this selfie spells a Shakira-esque style wherein, positioning-wise, “Hips Don’t Vie”.

Next was our staple Cannes czarina who gave Instagram India its Cinderella fairytale as Aishwarya bedazzled in a blue billowy ballroom gown that needed towing by her entire army in trail. It’s fine if a gown gingerly floated, but what when it’s too bloated, like the vanities of celebrities noted! That gives selfies a tough time being the right fit. When Dubai designer Michael Cinco’s ensemble vies with an accentuated Indian pout, painted ruby red with a vengeance to erase memories of last year’s purple-mouthed disaster out, it delivers a selfie style that doth scream ‘n’ spout, “Lips Don’t Lie”!

The third India Shining moment came courtesy Sonam. If last year saw Sonam trolled for a white gown that Twitterati tore into for its resemblance to “rumaali roti” or “masala dosa”, this season saw her make good past reviews ‘kharaab” by flaunting Elie Saab. Defining Sonam’s selfie style was a global pink silhouette plus a panache as Indian as her jewellery. To silence critics who did flay Sonam for sporting pink for safe play, the stylista took to Twitter with Audrey Hepburn’s quote “I believe in pink ....”, propelling the fashion police towards a rethink.

Its red carpet on fire, Cannes wasn’t the only place that came close to “Paris When it Sizzles”. How can we forget glitterati who in Miami gave selfie moments to India’s Twitterati! The “Baywatch” premiere saw Priyanka Chopra give Instagram India selfie styles where flying kisses came riding Nirav Modi-styled cocktail-ringed fingers. When Instagram sees bikini bods ‘n’ botoxed pouts rubbing shoulders with Beverly Hills brawn, can one blame Piggy Chops for spouting ‘n’ pouting selfie styles vain if it’s day out with Dwayne.

What Oscar season does for Hollywood’s Twitterati, May “Cannes” said to have done for Instagram India, consciously or self-ie consciously.
