Feeling the heat after the emergence of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on the political scene of Punjab and the Congress gearing up for the next assembly elections, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has chalked out a plan to spruce up their party cadres in the state and on foreign shores.

The SAD core committee on Monday decided to hold a training session for its office-bearers on February 19 and 20, besides inviting office-bearers of the NRI wings from different countries to Punjab to make them aware of the government’s achievements in its two consecutive terms.

The training session for NRI office-bearers is expected to be held in the last week of February or in the beginning of March, after the organisation set-up in all major countries having considerable Punjabi and Sikh population is completed.

“Our office-bearers need training. Soon we will chalk out a plan about what is to be taught to them, so that they can take the party’s achievements to people and make them aware of the government’s work in its two terms,” SAD spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema told HT, adding that for the past few years the training session had not taken place and hence its need was felt.

At the end of the training session, party president Sukhbir Singh Badal will answer queries of office-bearers. Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal chaired Monday’s core committee meeting in which senior leaders, including Sukhbir, party secretary general Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, assembly speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal, MPs Ranjit Singh Brahmpura and Prem Singh Chandumajra, ministers Sucha Singh Langah and Tota Singh and CM’s adviser Maheshinder Singh Grewal were also present.

The two-day session with the party’s local office-bearers will take place at Anandpur Sahib. “The place is serene and peaceful, so we will meet there,” Cheema said. Before the training session, the organisation set-up of the party’s different wings – women, youth, SC and kisan -- will be finalised.

The SAD has already announced office-bearers of the US unit, but the process was interrupted after the turmoil in the state following sacrilege incidents. The office-bearers for Canada, England and other European countries will be announced soon. The schedule of foreign office-bearers is being finalised and will be out soon.
