A 24-year-old homemaker and her paramour were busted for faking their kidnapping in a bid to implicate her husband and in-laws. The duo was arrested on Sunday, police said.

The woman, identified as Naina Chauhan, told police she committed the act to solemnise marriage with Kamal Kumar (20) of Meharban village.

Sub-inspector Davinder Sharma, SHO at Meharban police station, said Kamal, a chemist, lodged an FIR on August 22 against unidentified accused for kidnapping him. In his complaint, Kamal claimed that he received a call from an international number on August 16 and the person threatened to kill him. He further told police that three men kidnapped him and took him to an unknown place on August 19 where they threatened him and spoke to his relatives using his phone.

He claimed that the accused, however, released him near Khwajke village in a black car and fled.

The SHO said that on the same day, one Satpal Singh of Captain Colony of Meharban lodged an FIR stating that his daughter Naina was missing since August 13. He told police that his daughter left her maternal house for her in-law’s residence, but neither reached her home nor returned, following which the police was alerted.

Following his complaint, the police had registered a case under Section 346 (wrongful confinement in secret) of the IPC against unidentified accused.

The police said they became suspicious after Kamal kept changing his statement during investigation in his alleged kidnapping case. They added that even after going through the CCTV footage of the area from where Kamal had claimed he was kidnapped, they found nothing. “When posed harsh, the accused narrated the conspiracy the duo had hatched,” the SHO said.

Kamal told the police that after faking her disappearance, Naina hid in a rented accommodation, while he made multiple WhatsApp accounts with foreign numbers and made threat calls to family members.

Following the information provided by the Kamal, the police arrested Naina Chauhan from a rented accommodation.

“Kamal said he wanted to implicate Naina’s brother-in-law Sukha in his kidnapping case. Similarly, they had planned to implicate Naina’s husband and her in-laws to make ground of divorce,” the SHO added.

After cracking the cases of kidnap, the police filed a case under Sections 365 (kidnapping), 116, 177, 182, 193, 211, 497, 420 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the duo.
