Acting on the complaint of the girl’s father Ramdas Mishra, a native of Punjab’s Jalandhar district, the police arrested the accused Sayeed Alam (19) for converting his wife to Islam, the women’s police station incharge Mahasweta Devi said.

She added the youth had been sent to a remand home under police custody. Devi said the girl had been rescued and handed over to her parents after recording her statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before the first-class judicial magistrate Aditya Suman.

Alam had eloped with the girl from Jalandhar, where he worked as a labourer and had brought her to his native village where the two married recently.

He later converted his wife to Islam and changed her name to Sabina Khatun by submitting an affidavit through notary, the police officer said.
