Girl gang-raped in Dumka, five suspects detained

A 19-year-old tribal girl travelling with her boyfriend was allegedly gang-raped and assaulted by at least eight men in Dumka district, about 320 km from the state capital.

“The girl has been admitted to Dumka sadar hospital and her condition is reportedly stable and out of danger,” Dumka superintendent of police Mayur Patel Kanhiya Lal said. He added, “Five suspected perpetrators have been detained for questioning. All accused will be arrested soon.”

According to the FIR lodged with the Mufassil police station on the basis of victim’s statement, the incident took place on Wednesday night between 8-9 pm when the girl, travelling on a motorcycle along with her boyfriend, was intercepted by a group of young men in Digghi locality.

The miscreants threatened the victim and her friend wielding daggers and dragged the girl to a nearby secluded place. They summoned some of their friends and all raped the girl one-by-one. One of the them made a video of the whole incident, the victim disclosed to the police.

The victim’s friend informed the media that around five to six youths, aged between 20-25 years, first snatched his mobile phone and then summoned their other friends. Soon 15-20 local youths assembled there and dragged the girl to a nearby place.

“A special team has been constituted to nab the criminals. We are collecting every bit of evidences to ensure that none of the criminals involved in the case can escape the law. The girl underwent a thorough medical examination,” the SP said.
