Writer-turned-filmmaker Raju Murugan won over critics and audiences alike with his 2014 Tamil directorial debut film Cuckoo, a moving love story between two visually challenged individuals. Two years later, he returned with political satire Joker, which bagged the National Award for best film. Murugan is currently busy with a writing assignment, as he has been roped in to pen the dialogues for Dhruv Vikram starrer Varma, the Tamil remake of last year’s Telugu blockbuster, Arjun Reddy. The remake is being directed by Bala, and the project marks the debut of actor Vikram’s son.
“Bala sir really liked Murugan’s Joker, and he even called and appreciated him after watching the film. He expressed his interest to work with him. So when he commenced work on Varma, he reached out to Murugan and requested him to write the dialogues,” a source from the film’s unit told Hindustan Times. In the past, Murugan had penned dialogues for Karthi and Nagarjuna starrer Thozha, a Tamil adaptation of French film The Intouchables. Murugan was also signed to pen the dialogues for Mariyappan, the biopic on Indian Paralympic high jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu, which never took off for reasons unknown.
The makers are yet to zero in on a leading lady for the project. Shalini Pandey played the role in Arjun Reddy, a film that explored love and suffering in its purest and rawest form. Vijay Deverakonda played the titular role which earned him appreciation from all quarters. The story revolves around a medical surgeon with anger issues. He turns to alcohol and drugs when the girl he’s madly in love with is forced to marry another man.
