Dulquer Salmaan’s new pic as Gemini Ganesan shows he is ready for Mahanati

Nag Ashwin, the director of Mahanati, says it’s a brave move of a mainstream actor like Dulquer Salmaan to accept such a film.

Dulquer Salmaan has become one of the most promising actors of the Southern film industry within a small span. He will next be seen in bilingual biopic Mahanati based on the life of legendary actor Savitri.

Dulquer Salmaan became a household name after he played Faizi, a young man who follows his passion to become a chef, in Ustad Hotel.

He will be playing Gemini Ganesan in the film.

“Dulquer’s character of Gemini Ganesan will not merely be on how the legend will be perceived today based on his work and his image. The character goes beyond the physical resemblance, in understanding the veteran on a more emotional level,” said director Nag Ashwin.

He said that it’s brave move of a mainstream actor like Dulquer to accept the offer. “It takes a lot of courage for a popular star like him to agree to play the part. Unlike other stars who think so much about market, time and other factors while signing a role, it’s amazing that Dulquer gives importance to the story and the film more than just his character,” he said.

“Mahanati is a magnum opus period film set in the golden era. With massive set pieces, the film will be unlike anything we’ve explored in Indian cinema,” Ashwin said.

The release date of the film hasn’t been announced.
