Social media on Tuesday was abuzz with rumours that Geetha Arts, the popular production house behind films such as Magadheera and Ghajini, had acquired the Telugu remake rights of Vijay’s Mersal which is due for release soon in Telugu as Adhirindi. The reports were quickly quashed by Sri Thenandal Studios, the makers of Mersal, who confirmed that the Telugu dubbed version of the film will release soon. Although Adhirindi was supposed to release with Mersal; it was postponed after there was a delay in getting the film certified.
Mersal, meanwhile, is having a golden run at the box-office after recently storming into Rs 200 crore club worldwide. The film has set new records in many markets. In Kerala, with Rs 19 crore gross and counting, the film is all set to become the biggest non-Malayalam grosser in the state. In Malaysia, having earned 17 crore gross in 12 days since its release, the film is the third biggest grosser in the country after Dilwale and Kabali. Outside India, the film has so far grossed over a whopping $11 million (Rs 71 crore) and has become the third biggest overseas grosser this year after Baahubali 2 and Raees. With Mersal, Vijay has expanded his base outside Tamil Nadu with highly impressive numbers.
All eyes are on Vijay’s next with A.R Murugadoss as they team up for the third time after Thuppakki and Kaththi. Fans are hoping to see another blockbuster and it has to be seen if Murugadoss can deliver after the failure of Spyder. Vijay might also reunite with director Atlee, following the runaway success of Mersal. However, this project might only happen in the second half of next year. Atlee, meanwhile, is rumoured to team up with Sivakarthikeyan for a new project.
