Mohanlal took to Twitter to reveal the title of his film, inspired by the life of 16th Century naval chief Kunjali Marakkar, on Saturday. The film will be titled Marakkar- Arabikadalinte Simham. He also revealed details about the crew and wrote, along with the title logo, “Announcing my upcoming movie Marakkar- Arabikadalinte Simham, to be Directed by Priyadarshan and Production by Antony Perumbavoor , Santhosh T Kuruvilla and CJ Roy.”
Mohanlal isn’t the only one working on a period film about Kunjali Marakkar. Mammootty had earlier announced that he would be working on a similar film. Shaji Nadesan of August Cinema, the banner producing Mammootty’s film, said that the shoot will begin in July 2018. This film will be directed by Santosh Sivan.

The two superstars of Mollywood are going head to head with this period film and it will be interesting to see if either of them will be successful. Priyadarshan in an interview to TOI had said that he would give eight months to Mammootty’s film before he began work on his. He even cited the example of the two Bollywood Bhagat Singh movies that were released in 2002 - Ajay Devgn’s The Legend of Bhagat Singh and Bobby Deol’s 23rd March 1931: Shaheed. Both films underperformed at the box office and “all that resulted was bad blood between the teams. We don’t want that in the Malayalam film industry,” Priyadarshan said.
Mohanlal has been busy completing work on Odiyan, which is also produced by Anthony Perumbavoor. The actor will also be seen playing a pivotal part in Nivin Pauly’s film, Kayamkulam Kochunni. A still from the sets of the film, shared by Nivin, went viral on social media. Twitter users marvelled at the 57-year-old Mohanlal’s fitness.
