Prabhas on playing the larger-than-life Baahuhali: I don’t get stuck to characters

Baahubali star Prabhas, who is now focussing on the trilingual action film Saaho, says that as an actor, it isn’t difficult for him to dissociate himself from the characters he portrays on screen.

Prabhas says that he has moved on from Baahubali and is now concentrating on Saaho.

Prabhas as the strong, gentle, and larger-than-life Mahendra and Amarendra Baahubali, in SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, are still etched in the memory of cine-goers. While these two films have raised the bar higher for Indian cinema, the 37-year-old Telugu film star says that he moved on much earlier.

“I have come out of the [Baahubali] character a long time back, and the dissociation wasn’t tough for me. [As an actor] I don’t get stuck to characters [I play]. While working on the film, I was very much involved for almost four years and tried to stay in the character even after I went home,” says Prabhas, who is now busy with his next movie, Saaho, an action thriller. The trilingual film (to be made in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi) , helmed by Sujeeth, also stars Shraddha Kapoor.

Given that the character of Baahubali has become so big in terms of popularity, does it at all bother him that it might overshadow his future characters? Prabhas says, “We thought about it [while discussing Saaho] that if Baahubali works, what would we do?” This was because Saaho was being discussed even before Prabhas started filming Baahubali, and it was evident that Baahubali could become something epic. “But then,” adds the actor, “we also thought that Saaho has a universal script and the character I play in it is quite interesting — if the story is good, then the film will turn out to be good.”

Elaborating on this, Prabhas says that in Saaho, the audience will get to see him in a new avatar, and that’d be a welcome change. “Baahubali was a period drama, but this is a modern film. So along with the story, my look, be it hairstyle or physique, is also different.”
