Rajinikanth’s Kaala gets a warm welcome across the globe, faces heavy protest in Karnataka
Karnataka faces heavy protest over the release of Rajinikanth’s film Kaala. Shows have been cancelled across the state.
Director Pa Ranjith’s new film Kaala starring Rajinikanth has been received well across the globe. The critics have been impressed with Pa Ranjith’s treatment of the theme, however, not everything is working in favour of the film. Despite the Karnataka high court’s order to support the film’s release and provide security, the film is facing heavy protests in the state.
According to trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai, one show began only to be called off after protests began and theatres began to refund the ticket price. He wrote, “#Kaala Karnataka update - No show so far. One Theater in Bengaluru started but stopped almost immediately due to protest and refunded the audiences.”
TOI quoted a source as saying, “We are unable to screen Kaala film for the time being despite the security provided due to strong protests against its release by the Kannada Rakshana Vedike (KRV) activists outside.”
“Cauvery water is more important than a Rajinikanth film for us. Our honour and Kannada pride are at stake. He (Rajinikanth) has hurt us by supporting the cause of Tamil Nadu in the sharing of the river water,” said KRV president Praveen Shetty at a press conference.
On the other hand, Kaala happens to be the first Indian movie to be screened in Saudi Arabia in decades. The Middle-East can be a huge market for Indian films.
