Ram Gopal Varma on Puri Jagannadh’s Mehbooba: It’s better than Mahesh Babu starrer Pokiri
Telugu director Puri Jagannadh is launching his son, Akash, with Mehbooba.
Mahesh Babu’s Pokiri, which released over a decade ago, is unarguably Puri Jagannadh’s best work. Ram Gopal Varma, who saw parts of Puri’s latest work Mehbooba, feels the film is much better than Pokiri. “Varma took to twitter on Sunday night to heap praise on his former associate Jagannadh and his film. “I just saw parts of Puri Jagannadh’s Mehbooba and I strongly feel Mahesh Babu’s Pokiri is a flop in comparison. (It) could be because of his love for his son that he made this film so f****** special. Whatever be the reason, it’s looking epic.”

In another tweet, Varma heaped praise on young Akash Puri, son of Puri Jagannadh, who is making his acting debut via the project. “Puri Jagannadh’s son Akash in Mehbooba is just about the first ever method actor I ever saw and his tremendous capability and sincerity are visible in each and every single shot.”
Last year, when the first look poster was released, Puri shared a note about the film. “After finishing ‘Mehbooba’ script, I realized that I’m doing a highly intense and passionate love story for the first time ever which is completely out of repertoire of ideas. It’s a soulful love story in the backdrop of 1971 Indo-Pak war.” He added that he’s not making the film to launch his son. “It’s his love towards cinema that’s making me do this film with him.” Mangalore-based Neha Shetty has been roped in to play the leading lady.
The film went on the floors last October in Himachal Pradesh. It has also been shot in Punjab and Rajasthan. Sandeep Chowta has been roped in to compose music.
