Sonali Kulkarni is not one to love pompous birthday celebrations, as she has spent many birthdays on the sets where the day has often been celebrated with plenty of surprises. Recalling one such experience, she says, “While shooting for an Italian film years ago,I was greeted by the entire crew of the film singing the birthday song in Italian. They also had arranged for cake, wine and snacks. I’m not a fan of over-the-top celebrations, so I was a bit embarrassed.”

In fact, the actor even forbade director Kedar Shinde from making any plans for her birthday while she was shooting for the Marathi film, Aga Bai Arechyaa 2 (2015).

Sonali recalls another birthday celebration on the sets: this time while she was shooting for Dil Chahta Hai (2001). “Preity Zinta found out it was my birthday and made sure everyone, including Zoya Akhtar, knew about it. On the same set, Aamir Khan gifted me two books, making it a memorable day.”

For the past two years, Sonali has made sure her birthday celebrations have been low-key family affairs. “I don’t like the attention that birthdays bring. I love spending quality time with my family and close friends. In

the past two years, I interacted with my fans and was overwhelmed by their good wishes. My daughter, who started writing recently, makes a birthday greeting card for me. This is my notion of an ideal birthday.”
