There was a reason trade pundits declared Mahesh Babu’s Spyder a potential money-spinner before its release on September 27. Despite mixed reviews, the film has opened big in key foreign markets. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh has tweeted about the film’s business. He says Spyder has collected more than $1 million (Rs 6.59 crore) in the US market alone.
According to a report in Forbes, Spyder has become the third Indian film in 2017 to debut with a seven-figure tally in the US. The film has finished on the fifth place in the US behind Kingsman: The Golden Circle, IT, Jeepers Creepers 3 and the Lego Ninjago Movie. Among Indian films, Baahubali 2 holds the record for the highest opening at the US box office.
It’s a phenomenal feat to achieve and shows Mahesh Babu’s grip over the overseas audiences.
Jr NTR’s Jai Lava Kusa is also minting money in the same market. The film, which released on September 20 in the US, has garnered more than $1.5 million so far.
Spyder, a bilingual spy-thriller shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil, marks the maiden collaboration of director AR Murugadoss and Mahesh Babu, who had wanted to collaborate for a decade.
Made on a budget of whopping Rs 125 crore, the film features Mahesh Babu in the role of an intelligence bureau officer. One of the highlights of the film is its action, overseen by National Award-winning stunt choreographer Peter Hein.
The film also stars Rakul Preet Singh, SJ Suryah and Bharath. Suryah plays a serial killer and it is Mahesh’s job to save the world from him.
The report suggests that the film may gross just $113,000 in the US, which would represent a major drop from the opening day. It will be interesting to see how Spyder fares in the domestic market.
