KOLKATA: Last season’s runners-up FC Goa rallied to hold Atletico de Kolkata 1-1 and open their account after a hat-trick of defeats in the Indian Super League on Sunday.
South African Sameehg Doutie put ATK ahead as early in the sixth minute but the Goans bounced back riding on a spot kick from Joffre Mateu in the 76th minute.
Both teams were reduced to 10 players with ATK receiving as many as three yellow cards and one red, while FC Goa had a share of four yellow cards and one red in the hard-fought match at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium.
The result meant Zico’s team opened their account but remained at the bottom. ATK now have one win and three draws to be on the third place with six points.
JAYARAM LOSES IN FINAL
ALMERE: Indian shuttler Ajay Jayaram failed to notched up his third straight title in the Dutch Open as the top-seed lost 10-21, 21-17, 18-21 to second seed Tzu Wei Wang of Chinese Taipei in 55 minutes. Jayaram had won the title of this Grand Prix tournament in 2014 and 2015.
SOURABH WINS TITLE
TAIPEI CITY: Shuttler Sourabh Verma defeated Malaysia’s Daren Liew 12-10, 12-10, 3-3 in the summit clash to clinch the Chinese Taipei Open title on Sunday.
The 23-year-old outplayed his opponent in the first two games and Liew retired in the third game due to a shoulder injury.
LAHIRI LOSES PLAY-OFF
MACAO: Golfer Anirban Lahiri reeled off seven successive birdies to make the play-off but missed the title after losing to Thai Pavit Tangkamolprasert on the final day of the Venetian Macao Open on Sunday. There were four Indians in top-eight, with S Chikkarangappa ending tied third, Rahil Gangjee finishing seventh and Rashid Khan signing off tied eighth.
NEERAJ IN WBC RANKINGS
NEW DELHI: Indian boxer Neeraj Goyat is all set to break into the WBC’s world rankings after retaining his welterweight Asia title by outpunching Australian Ben Kite.
The 24-year-old prevailed via unanimous decision in the 12-round contest against his rival, who came in with an experience of fighting 9 bouts.
“My opponent was a hard-puncher, his reach was also longer but I kept my patience and eventually managed to tire him out,” Neeraj said after becoming the first Indian to defend a pro title.
