EUGENE, OREGON: Allyson Felix and Justin Gatlin powered to the fastest times in the world this year to book their tickets for the Rio Olympics at a high standard US trials on Sunday.
World champion Felix shook off an ailing ankle to win the women’s 400 metres in 49.68 seconds before Gatlin claimed the 100 metres over fellow world medallist Trayvon Bromell in 9.80 seconds. The 20-year-old Bromell was second in 9.84.
World-leading performances were also recorded in the men’s 400 metres, long jump, women’s high jump and the decathlon.
Felix, still running in pain from the April injury, accelerated from fifth place off the bend to take the lead on the home straight and keep alive her dream of becoming only the third woman to complete a 200400 double at the same Olympics.
CAS TO RULE ON RUSSIAN ATHLETES’ RIO ENTRY
LAUSANNE: Athletics’ governing body IAAF and the Russian Olympic Committee ( ROC) have agreed to let the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rule on whether Russian athletes can compete at the Rio Games, CAS said on Monday.
“ROC, the International Association of Athletics Federations ( IAAF) and 68 Russian athletes have concluded a specific arbitration agreement to designate (CAS) as the final instance to settle the dispute... concerning the participation of 68 athletes in the Olympic Games Rio 2016,” a court statement said.
DURANT TO JOIN GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS
LOS ANGELES: Former Most Valuable Player Kevin Durant is joining the Golden State Warriors, giving the team perhaps the best consolation prize they could have hoped for after losing the NBA Finals in crushing fashion last month.
Durant’s decision, which he announced on Monday in a piece posted on a website, was the most highly anticipated move of the NBA’s off-season and capped what he called the most challenging few weeks of his professional life.
“The primary mandate I had for myself in making this decision was to have it based on the potential for my growth as a player — as that has always steered me in the right direction,” Durant wrote in a post called ‘My Next Chapter’.
