The union cabinet is set to back the All India Football Federation (AIFF)'s bid to host the under-17 FIFA World Cup in 2017.

The AIFF needs Rs.120 crore from the centre to build infrastructure and also its guarantees on several counts, including employment visas and tax exemptions for foreign entities.

The last major sports event approved by the centre was the Delhi's Commonwealth Games but it ran into major corruption charges.

A section within the government had also opposed the idea of hosting such a mega event in the capital.

The World Cup plan involves upgrading six stadiums - Jawaharlal Nehru of Delhi (Rs.5 crore), Salt Lake in Kolkata (Rs.15 crore), Cooperage in Mumbai (Rs.25 crore), Balewadi complex in Pune (Rs.10 crore) BFA of Bangalore (Rs.35 crore) and one stadium in Goa, Assam or Kerala.
